Many things like talking to NPCs, fighting enemies, moving units, building barracks become tedious and hard to navigate with just the X button. Unfortunately, the vast majority of my enjoyment of Spellforce III Reforced has been plagued by the controls and various popup menus. I’m assuming they can be fixed in a pretty small patch, but out of nowhere the dialogue would sound like it was coming from a fast food drive-thru speaker. This is just a plea to every video game developer out there. I really like being able to see what I’m looking at. Perhaps it wouldn’t be as big of an issue if I played this on a computer with the monitor two feet away from my face, but this is on a TV across the room from me. I feel like there needs to be more accessibility options because Spellforce III Reforced has me sorely missing them. That is my biggest pet peeve when it comes to playing video games in 2022. That problem is even further exaggerated by the fact that you cannot adjust text size. Not to mention that I have very poor eyesight and struggle to actually read what’s on my screen. I find it very difficult to actually do what I’m trying to do because I keep getting lost in the radial menus. The issue is each button opens up a menu, and then you often have another button that opens up a menu within the first menu, and then it continues. There are lots of onscreen button prompts that tell you what each button does. I can feel the work and effort the developers put into making this feel right. The way Spellforce III Reforced controls on my PS5 controller is far and away my biggest problem with this game. Having seen this video, I figured I’d have enough speed to hit the ground running. “Control your hero and entire armies with a mere push of a button,” it says. The video showcases how easy and user friendly the controls are. I had actually seen the video months before getting the review code for this game. The official PlayStation YouTube channel released a video showcasing how they did all of that. Grimlore Games went and did something brave and daring by redesigning their initial control set into a controller. These games excel on those controllers because that was how they were initially designed to be played.
